The boundary layer test section at Politecnico di Milano’s wind tunnel, with its large size and unique features, is ideal for sailing yacht studies. In the past, wind tunnel tests have been used as a crucial design tool for improving performance of sailing yachts taking part in top-level competitions, such as the America’s Cup, Volvo Ocean Race, and all the Olympic classes. Tests are particularly useful for sail plan optimization, sail design, and rig tuning. Recently, tests have also assessed the aerodynamics of WASP (Wind Assisted Ship Propulsion) devices—including rigid sails, suction sails, and Flettner rotors—to measure individual and interactive performance. The low turbulence section further supports keel and rudder shape optimization.
