 Wind Actions on a Pantograph

Pantograph aerodynamics is very important to determine the contact forces between the catenary line and the collector head, reducing the risk of damage to the overhead line and the occurrence of electric arc strike. Tests on aerodynamic uplift were performed for different wind direction, considering both train running directions. The forces were measured installing the pantograph on a 6 component force balance to get overall aerodynamic forces, while the uplift of the collector head was measured using load cells. The data measured were used to validate a CFD model of the pantograph and to get a more detailed information on the pantograph aerodynamics. With CFD it is possible also to extend wind tunnel results to train application, by installing the pantograph on the roof of a train.
