Julsundet bridge hangers

Hanger cables are important structural elements in suspension bridges. Their cylindrical structure, light mass, flexibility and low structural damping, make the hangers prone to vortex induced vibration. Wind tunnel tests have been performed to evaluate the aerodynamic behavior of the Julsundet bridge hangers in Norway, testing different coverings: among them the the HDPE with double helical fillet, and the so-called “cactus shaped” pipe surface. The wind tunnel campaign was finalized at measuring the aerodynamic coefficients for the different configurations and providing a comprehensive set of data allowing for the dimensioning of a reliable damping system.
