The aerodynamic design of an observation wheel involves assessing the aerodynamic behaviour of the spoke cables, considering both static load and dynamic response. Spokes are flexible cylinders characterized by low natural frequencies and low structural damping, making them susceptible to vortex-induced vibrations and galloping phenomena. An experimental campaign was conducted on the Ain Dubai spokes to also evaluate the impact of inclination angle on aerodynamics. Dynamic tests were then carried out to determine the necessary damping level to control vibration phenomena. Additionally, the aerodynamic impact of a complex LED lighting system installed on certain spokes was investigated.
