Aerodynamic force modelling for IMS rule using wind tunnel techniques
A joint research between Politecnico di Milano and ORC (Offshore Racing Congress) was performed to investigate the performances of upwind sails. A wide experimental campaign was carried out in the wind tunnel on a scaled yacht model equipped with several different sail plan.
In particular a series of rig planform variations in mainsail roach and jib overlap have been tested in order to overcome some perceived inequities in the ratings of boats of various rig design racing under the International Measurement System (IMS).The results of these investigation were used to assist the International Technical Committee (ITC) in changing the formulations in the IMS sail aerodynamic model.
